Mattie has been an avid reader for longer than she can remember. As a young child, she was read a bedtime story every night. Having her parents read to her sparked a lifetime love of reading. She especially loved any books about the Titanic, the Bermuda triangle, Saturn, Jupiter, dinosaurs, and aliens. Having her parents read to her and having a deep passion for knowledge are the main reasons reading was something that came easy to her.
People read for many reasons. One reason is to obtain knowledge. They can learn facts and they can also learn about the feelings and opinions of others. Reading is a way to connect individuals from every walk of life. Some read to escape reality, and others read to travel to places they dream of, without ever having to leave their home. Mattie does not think that the reason someone reads is too important, what matters is that they are reading.
In order to be a good reader, one must be fully invested in what they're reading. It is important to go into it having a completely open mind and not let preconceived notions deter you from your reading. It is also important to delve deeper into the meaning. Good writers use every single word for a reason, and as a reader, it is your job to decipher what they were trying to say.
What makes reading easy and enjoyable to Mattie is when the story has a good flow to it. Mattie also enjoys when the characters are complex and they are believable. Other qualities that make it easy are engaging dialogue and being genuinely interested in the topic at hand.
What makes reading hard for Mattie is being bombarded with copious amounts of characters who have no real purpose in the furthering of the plot. Mattie does not enjoy romantic novels with scantily clad individuals gracing the covers. Reading is also hard when given a deadline.
Mattie goes about choosing a book firstly if the book has a clever title. If a book has a clever title, it's typically safe to assume the book will be filled with wit. Qualities Mattie looks for in a book are: interesting title, character development, large amounts of dialogue and plenty full of suspenseful moments.
How often Mattie reads at home is dependent on the amount of freetime she has. Sadly, as she gets older, she has less and less time to read. In an ideal world, Mattie would want to be able to finish a book in a week, but sadly that is not possible as of now. Mattie reads about a book a month right now.
Mattie absolutely loves reading, and is very sad at not having as much time as she would like to do. That being said, all books were not created equal. In Matties's opinion, there is nothing better than reading a good book, and there is nothing worse than having to read a bad book.
